Problems in merging Earth sensing satellite data sets
Satellite remote sensing systems provide a tremendous source of data flow to the Earth science community. These systems provide scientists with data of types and on a scale previously unattainable. Looking forward to the capabilities of Space Station and the Earth Observing System (EOS), the full realization of the potential of satellite remote sensing will be handicapped by inadequate information systems. There is a growing emphasis in Earth science research to ask questions which are multidisciplinary in nature and global in scale. Many of these research projects emphasize the interactions of the land surface, the atmosphere, and the oceans through various physical mechanisms. Conducting this research requires large and complex data sets and teams of multidisciplinary scientists, often working at remote locations. A review of the problems of merging these large volumes of data into spatially referenced and manageable data sets is presented
Public perceptions of recycled water: a survey of visitors to the London 2012 Olympic Park
The Old Ford Water Recycling Plant, operated by Thames Water, was used to supply non-potable recycled blackwater to some of the venues at the London 2012 Games. In an effort to learn from this experience, Thames Water commissioned a survey of visitors to the Olympic Park during the Games to explore public responses to the water recycling project. Results show a very high level of support for using non-potable recycled blackwater, both in public venues and in homes. Such findings may indicate a growing receptivity towards this technology, and show that Thames Water (and other private water companies) are well placed to encourage and even lead public discussion around the role of water reuse in the future of urban water supplies
Concentration in the International Arms Industry¤
The end of the Cold War led to a large drop in world military expenditure, rising fixed costs of developing weapons because of technological changes and a reduction of national preference for domestic weapons. Alongside these developments has been an increase in concentration in the world arms industry, which at the end of the Cold War had been very unconcentrated with concentration ratios close to the Sutton lower bound. This paper provides an empirical and theoretical analysis of this process. It examines the dynamics of the evolution of concentration and then shows that a trade model with optimal procurement decisions can capture the main features of this empirical analysis.market structure, arms industry, procurement
Realistic Ionizing Fluxes for Young Stellar Populations from 0.05 to twice solar metallicity
We present a new grid of ionizing fluxes for O and Wolf-Rayet stars for use
with evolutionary synthesis codes and single star H II region analyses. A total
of 230 expanding, non-LTE, line-blanketed model atmospheres have been
calculated for five metallicities (0.05, 0.2, 0.4, 1 and 2 solar) using the
WM-basic code of Pauldrach et al. (2001) and the CMFGEN code of Hillier &
Miller (1998). The stellar wind parameters are scaled with metallicity for both
O and W-R stars. We incorporate the new models into Starburst99 (Leitherer et
al. 1999) and compare the ionizing outputs with Schaerer & Vacca (1998) and
Leitherer et al. (1999). The changes in the output ionizing fluxes are
dramatic, particularly below 228 A. We also find lower fluxes in the He I
continuum for Z > 0.4 solar and ages < 7 Myr because of the increased line
blanketing. We test the accuracy of the new models by constructing
photoionization models. We show that for the dwarf O star grid, He I 5876/H
beta decreases between Z = 1 and twice solar in a similar manner to
observations (e.g. Bresolin et al. 1999) due to the increased effect of line
blanketing. We therefore suggest that a lowering of the upper mass limit at
high abundances is not required to explain the observations. For the case of an
instantaneous burst, we plot the softness parameter "eta prime" against the
abundance indicator R_23. The new models are coincident with the data of
Bresolin et al. (1999), particularly during the W-R phase, unlike previous

Intrusion Detection Systems for Community Wireless Mesh Networks
Wireless mesh networks are being increasingly used to provide affordable network connectivity to communities where wired deployment strategies are either not possible or are prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, computer networks (including mesh networks) are frequently being exploited by increasingly profit-driven and insidious attackers, which can affect their utility for legitimate use. In response to this, a number of countermeasures have been developed, including intrusion detection systems that aim to detect anomalous behaviour caused by attacks. We present a set of socio-technical challenges associated with developing an intrusion detection system for a community wireless mesh network. The attack space on a mesh network is particularly large; we motivate the need for and describe the challenges of adopting an asset-driven approach to managing this space. Finally, we present an initial design of a modular architecture for intrusion detection, highlighting how it addresses the identified challenges
